The Japanese Visitors Association (JAVA) and the Canada Japan Society (CJS) are proud to be sponsoring the incredibly popular comedy Moteki during the first ever Toronto Japanese Film Festival this June at the Japanese Canadian Cultural Centre (JCCC). This inaugural festival will be a two week showcase of the best of Japanese contemporary cinema in Toronto. Proceeds will go to the JCCC’s Japan Earthquake Relief Fund.

Tickets are on sale as of May 1st, so please come out to the events listed below to pick up yours. If you have any questions or ticket enquiries, please get in touch at letsjavatoronto@gmail.com .

About Moteki (2011):

Moteki is the story of a 31 year-old virgin Yukiyo Fujimoto, a young fellow with no money, no aspirations and no girlfriend. Leaving his temp job, he decides to finally get a life and lands a job as a writer for an Internet news site. But love continues to elude him. At the nadir of his loneliness and social isolation, comes the arrival of his “Moteki” – a period of sexual magnetism and romantic irresistibility.

Suddenly he finds himself in the amorous sights of four very attractive but very different women. Is Yukiyo ready for all the joy, heartbreak, promise, delusion, ecstasy, and agony that await him? Will he reach the elusive promised land of true love (sex included)?

Moteki is hilarious, energetic and heartfelt with extravagant visuals and an eclectic mix of main and subculture J-POP. Nominated for numerous Japanese Academy Awards, it was selected on the Top Films of 2011 by The Japan Times, Kinema Jumpo and Eiga Geijutsu.

JET,JCSA,JAVA

JETAA & JCSA will be building on the success of their 1st coordinated Hanami Picnic last year by inviting JAVA to join for an even bigger Hanami Picnic this year”

Or so we thought…
Spring came so early that the cherry blossoms have all disappeared.

But we won’t let unexpectedly beautiful weather stand in the way of us having a good time together! We’re going to hold a “Post-Hanami Picnic” at the same time that we usually hold our annual cherry blossom-viewing get-together. Our picnic will start at 1pm on Sunday, April 29th in High Park in the same place as last year. Please see the map here.

So former JETs, JCSA language exchangers, and JAVA members: We’ll bring drinks and snacks, but please feel free to bring your own food and lots of friends to share it with. We’ll be at the same beautiful vista in High Park that we set up last year. We’ll provide some traditional Japanese “leisure sheets” (aka tarps) to sit on, and we’ll bring some refreshments and sports equipment.

We’ll send out a message thru the facebook event 24 hours before if the weather is bad and we’re thinking of postponing the event.

Please contact us with any questions etc:

8:00-8:15 Kohei Sakamoto
“こんにちは!坂本昂平と言います!
日本では大学生やってて、休学してこっちに英語を勉強しに、すごい人間になるためにきました!(^ ^)笑 9才の時にピアノを始めましたが、サボり過ぎて全然上手くなりませんでした(・_・; なので今日付けでそれを克服したいと思います!!みなさん僕と一緒に歌ってください(^-^)/

8:15-8:45 Naoko & Kevin
Classically trained Marimba & Piano pros get loose with a jam that would shatter Grandma’s jar.

Time to take it easy, get some water, meet the artists

9:00-9:45 Asiansploitation
Asiansploitation is Toronto’s Just for Laughs Award-Winning ‘Sketch Comedy troupe to watch’ (Toronto Star); Fringe Fest 2010 Patron’s Pick, and have been spinning comedy gold since they formed in 2006. They are working on an all-new show which will be at The George Ignatieff Theatre at U of T on June 6, 7, 8, 9 and would like to invite JAVA and friends to see them in action.

For Artist’s Night, they’d like to welcome 5 of their 7 members to the stage: Gene Abella, James Cheng, Andrea James Lui, Franco Nguyen, and Jeff Santos.

9:45-10:00 Robert Paul Weston
Robert Paul Weston is the award-winning children’s author of Zorgamazoo, recently optioned for film by the producer of Shrek. His second novel, Dust City, was shortlisted for the 2011 Edgar Alan Poe Award from the Mystery Writers of America. For Artist’s Night, he will be reading from his award-winning novel-in-verse, Zorgamazoo, recently optioned for film by the producers of Shrek.

10:00-10:45 After Hours
Fresh off of their hit performance at JapanAid’s Iro! After Hours is and always has been about the tradition of street-corner singing. You can call it a cappella, you can call it “doo-wop” but it’s always been about taking the songs that they love, finding the songs’ inner harmonies and re-interpreting the music with only their voices.

Tickets are sold out, thank you for your support :) We can’t provide any more tickets to sell at the door. Thank you for your understanding.

Artist’s Night on Saturday, April 7th at the University of Toronto’s historic Hart House will feature a variety of musical and comedic performances, including longtime JAVA favorites After Hours, sketch/improv comedy troupe (and longtime supporters of the JCSA at U of T) Asiansploitation, plus many more.

At our first ever Artist’s Night, JAVA (the JApanese Visitors Association) brings together three of our favorite activities:

1) supporting and sharing the message of local and international artists
2) connecting Japanese-speaking Toronto visitors with local and international artists
3) raising money for a good cause

Artist’s Night is a fundraiser with all proceeds being split evenly between the artists and JAVA. JAVA is raising funds to support the free seminars and other events and services we offer to the Japanese speakers and the “Japan-in-Toronto” community. Please come out, support JAVA, and support great performers.

Tickets are all sold out thanks to everyone’s support.

Tickets were $10 in advance, $12 at the door. Tickets were available through JAVA representatives at the JCSA at U of T every Saturday from 14:30-17:00 (room 3202 in the Sandford Fleming Building, 10 Kings College Road), and at Japanada every Tuesday from 18:30-21:00 at Urbana Coffee at 878 Yonge St (just North of Bloor). We can no longer do reservations or sell tickets, but please email us at letsjavatoronto@gmail.com if you have questions. Big thanks to JCSA and Japanada for supporting our event!

Artists and Schedule:

7:00 Doors Open

7:30-7:50 Tatsu from VPV
Tatsu began learning the fiddle completely by accident after meeting a friend on a monorail train in Okinawa, 6 years after being disillusioned by classical violin music. He plays a few different styles of fiddle music, mostly Irish but with a smattering of Scottish, Breton and a new addition, French Canadian. He also plays the Bodhran, an Irish drum that is a lot of fun to fool around with. He will play a selection of tunes from these diverse areas plus show you what the Bodhran drum can do.

7:50-8:00 Toronto Bozu
A fresh new manzai-combi containing the rich ingredients that bring out Canadian & Japanese flavour. Toronto Bozu brings together the Akhil, Yuho, and the latest Japanese o-warai.

8:00-8:15 Kohei Sakamoto
“Hi, I’m Kohei Sakamoto. I’m a Japanese university student in Japan. I came here to study English and do something awesome that can’t be done in Japan.
I started playing a piano at the age of nine. However, my piano skill is awful.lol
So, from Artist’s Night, I’ll change it to awesome:D
Please sing with me:)
